Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), which is under scanner over irregularities in faculty hiring and financial matters, is in for more trouble as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also probing similar allegations.

After Human Resource Development Ministry had in September last year issued a showcause notice against the Vice-Chancellor of AMU,  Zameeruddin Shah, on a complaint of irregularities in faculty hiring and financial issues, CBI too had sought a written reply from the University officials in December last year.

According to the University officials, they had sent a reply to CBI by January, but, a CBI official wanted more explanation on the matter. So the agency visited the University again this month.

However, the agency is mum over their further investigation which they carried out during their visit to the University.

“A CBI official visited on February 18 and asked for more explanation on a reply that was sent by the University earlier, to a query in the month of December. The allegations are of financial irregularities, similar in nature to those being probed by the HRD Ministry too,” said Javed Akhtar, Registrar of the University.

The CBI inquiry is about financial irregularities in the university, in the name of Vice-Chancellor  Zameeruddin Shah. The Ministry had also sought a detailed reply from the Vice-Chancellor over allegations of financial irregularities and irregularities in faculty hiring.

The allegations against Shah include — illegal transfer of funds collected from students from the University’s account to the account of a private trust, appointment of a retired Brigadier as Pro V-C, and Appointment of ineligible candidates as assistant professors were appointed against vacant positions of professor and associate professor.

Shah is among the eight central university V-Cs, who have come under the scanner after the NDA government took charge in 2014. The ministry had initiated the process to launch a probe against him based on the complaint submitted by Wasim Ahmed, ex-Visitor’s nominee to the AMU Court.

Probe against Allahbad University Vice-Chancellor Rattan Lal Hangloo is also underway. However, according to sources, the ministry is not likely to take an action against him.
