State may go for centralised admission system.
The issue of admission in post-graduate medical courses has been trapped in a legal battle as many students have filed petitions in the Gujarat high court (HC).
A couple of students, who studied MBBS in colleges affiliated to Bhavnagar University in Bhavnagar and MS University in Vadodara, have demanded conduct of admission based on marks obtained by them in MBBS.
On the other side, a group of MBBS students of MS University have protested the petitions and sought admission based on Neet score. The HC is likely to hear the matter after June 10.
Meanwhile, the state government plans to place all medical colleges of different universities in the state under a single umbrella and admit students through a centralised admission system.
The government lawyer, on Monday, stated before the HC that the state might abolish the system of giving admission based on merit list prepared with marks obtained by students in MBBS. Instead, the state might adopt a uniform policy of giving admission through scores in Neet examination.
On this, the HC asked the government to file an affidavit on June 30 to inform the court about the decision taken by the latter over the admission issue. The government and universities have got additional time of two months to complete the admission process until July 31. Earlier, the Supreme Court had set a deadline of May 31. Hence, the HC will take up further hearing of the admission issue after June 10, when the summer vacation ends.
A group of students is against admission based on MBBS marks as hundreds of students have appeared in Neet, introduced by the Medical Council of India (MCI) this year. The lawyers of the student argued before the HC that the students had obtained high scores by appearing in the competitive exam and are eligible to get admission in PG courses.
Even the government had approved admission through Neet in various universities, including Gujarat University. But Bhavnagar and MS University are giving admission based on MBBS marks.
More than 115 petitions were filed before the Supreme Court in favour and against Neet examination. The top court will decide the issue in July.
