Several students appearing for the PhD Entrance Test (PET) for admission into the University of Mumbai were left in a lurch when the exam started after a delay of 15 minutes to 1 hour at some exam centres on Saturday.

The exam which was supposed to be conducted between 2-5 pm on Saturday started after a delay at some of the centres. At the KJ Somaiyya Institute of Engineering and Information Technology, the exam started after an hour-long delay, leaving several students clueless. “College officials told us that there was a delay in starting the exam due to some error in getting the papers from the university. The exam finally started at 3 pm and it was utter chaos,” said an aspirant from the centre on the condition of anonymity. The exam ended at 6pm as the university granted an extra hour to make up for the delay. Similarly at Thane’s AP Shah College of Technology, students were handed the papers after a delay of about 15 minutes.

The University of Mumbai conducts the PET exam for admissions to its PhD programmes every year. This year, a total of 3333 students appeared for the exam across 12 centres in the city. Chaos during the exam added to the existing woes of the aspirants as the university failed to generate hall tickets until Friday night. “There was complete mismanagement on part of the university. We had no idea where our centre was until a few hours before the exam,” said another aspirant.

Controller of examinations at the University, Deepak Wasave said that the exam went smoothly barring the delay at KJ Somaiyya, Sion. “At  KJ Somaiyya Institute of Technology there was some issue with respect to downloading the paper leading to the delay. We gave extra time to students to make up for the delay. Overall exams went smoothly” added Wasave.
