With a growing need to boost sports education in schools, the state’s school education and sports department has decided to give awards to sports teachers and also form a district coaching centre.
According to a government resolution issued by the state, for the implementation of Maharashtra state sports policy 2012, sports teachers in the state will be bestowed with an award. Similarly, under the same policy, funds have been allotted to establish a district coaching centre.
A separate category will be created under the state ideal teachers award which is given to teachers across the state on on September 5, on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. Each year, on January 26, the state announces the Savitribai Phule Ideal Teacher Award for 106 teachers and awards a cash prize of Rs10,000 on Teachers’ Day.
This year on, the state has also announced a tablet computer for the awardees. The scout and guide teachers will also receive the same from the next year on.
Schools have welcomed the move. “With children increasingly becoming couch potatoes, it is necessary for schools to encourage students to engage in various sports. Rewarding the teacher will ensure that they will be motivated to work and pass it on to the students,” said Vilas Parab, principal, Bal Mohan Vidyamandir, Dadar.
Suresh Nair, principal of Vivek Vidyalaya in Goregaon, said that these days, very few students develop an interest in sports through schools. “It is the extra classes that parents send them to, that actually provide the push. Encouraging sports in schools will also be very beneficial to students from small towns and villages as they most often do not have access private coaching,” said Suresh Nair, principal, Vivek Vidyalaya, Goregaon.
