Just a day after DNA reported about a 15-year-old, Class 10 student with 90 per cent disability being allotted a centre on the second floor, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) on Wednesday, took cognisance of the issue and changed the centre for the student.

On Wednesday, the paper had reported about the plight of Omkar Samla, a student of Bengali Education Society's High School in Dadar as he had to be carried to the second floor exam hall by his parents due to the school's apathy in requesting a centre change on medical grounds. Samla, who has a spinal cord defect since birth is wheelchair-bound and has 90 per cent impairment. His parents had requested the school to ensure that he is allotted a centre near their house in Naigaon, Dadar with ground floor seating arrangement. A few days before the exam, however, they got to know that Samla has been allotted a seat on the third floor at Navbharat School, which is about fifteen minutes from his residence. Ever since, his mother Jayashree was running from pillar to post to get the centre changed but nothing seemed to have helped.

After the paper reported the student's plight, the officials at the Mumbai division board took cognizance of the issue and changed the student's centre to a ground floor school very close to his residence. "The child is entitled to get a centre near his house on the ground floor due to his disability as per the Board norms.

"However, the school, or the centre had not sent us any such request for centre change and the issue was thus not brought to our notice. As soon as we came to know about it, we got the centre changed," said Siddheshwar Chandekar, Secretary, Mumbai Divisional Board.

On Wednesday evening, Samla's mother got to know from the Board authorities that he has been allotted a fresh centre — Krantishinh Nanasaheb Patil Vidyalay at Naigaon which is near the family's residence — for the remaining papers. "We are extremely happy that the Board has taken note of our case and has acted so fast," said Jayashree.
