Mohit Shah was feeling on top of the world on Friday evening. And he had every reason to be.

The 17-year-old Thane resident was among the high-scorers in the Joint Entrance Examination (advanced) examination which was held about three weeks ago. With a score of 287 out of 360, Shah was ranked forty-eighth across the country. “I had expected to score around 283 marks, and I was a little surprised when I saw the answer key,” said Shah, a student of Thane’s Shubham Raje Junior College, who notched 88.67% marks in the class 12 board exam.

Mohit scored 112 marks in physics, 113 in mathematics and 62 in chemistry. He only wishes he had concentrated a little more in chemistry.

“I should’ve started studying organic chemistry a little earlier. It’s the toughest part of the exam,” said Shah, who studied for about eight hours a day for the past two years.

With sights set on computer science at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay or IIT-B. “Of course, I’m quite excited that I will now be able to pursue computer science at IIT. I’ve heard so many good things about the institution. I’m looking forward to it,” said Shah.

The icing on cake is that many of his friends, who have also scored quite well, will continue to give him company at IIT-B.

Shah, who moved to Thane soon after finishing school, said he had a tough time commuting from his college in Thane to his coaching classes in Chembur. “It was painful. I used to be completely fatigued with all that travelling,” said Shah.

Despite the fatigue and the routine, it wasn’t only academics for this teenybopper who is an avid lover of cricket and fiction novels. “Often, I used to miss watching matches due to my coaching class schedule. But then, I would get home and then catch the highlights,” he said.
