If the current admission figures are anything to go by, then students of Gujarat — a state known for its business acumen — are fast losing interest in one of the most sought after courses, Master of Business Administration (MBA).

The mock admission round for MBA ended on Thursday and to everyone’s surprise, over 50 per cent.

Of the 12,345 MBA seats in all colleges across the state, the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) gives admission for 10,449 seats — around 75 per cent.

However, only 5,190 students have booked seats in 124 colleges of the state so far. It means that only 49.66 per cent seats have been filled and 5,259 are still lying vacant.

To make matters worse, five colleges have failed to get even a single admission.
There are 31 institutes, which got less than 10 students while 43 institutes caught the interest of less than 20 students. Only 45 institutes managed to get 100 per cent student allocation.

Of course, this is an expected outcome as not many students registered themselves since the time registration began.

Last year, the situation was slightly better as around 40 per cent of the 14,000 registered students did not take admission. The reason behind the decline, according to officials, is that multiple exams are considered for admission to MBA. Hence, students prefer to register at varsities only where they intend to take admission.

UV Shah, special duty official of ACPC, said last year, too, students took admission only in top listed colleges.

“Colleges in interior parts or the ones who do not have proper infrastructure are struggling. Such colleges do not attract good companies for campus placements and the quality of education might also be not good,” said an official of Gujarat Technological University.

It is also believed that MBA students do not get lucrative job offers as they used to a few years ago.
