The rapid economic growth of India has created the need for strong business leaders and skilled managers to capitalise on growth opportunities. However, as per experts, India currently faces a dearth of management skills to compete internationally. This is reflected in the number of working professionals opting for MBA. Dr. Manoranjan Dhal, Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) talks about understanding the scope and future of a management degree.

What difference do you see in attitude, value, exposure and ambition of today's youth compared to the previous generation?

The past two decades have seen a shift in the world's perception of India. This could be the work ethic which Indian youth exhibit or the value system that they follow. They are ambitious and career-oriented, which could also be attributed to increasing opportunities, in science, manufacturing and entrepreneurship.

Do you think India needs better leaders or managers given the current scenario?

With the advancement and swift adoption of technology it is imperative that India produces better leaders or managers. Management is a process of continuous learning and adapting such learnings into current scenarios.

With so many institutes offering MBA, isn't it losing it's purpose?

Anything overdone will lose its purpose. However, learning is a continuous process and can never be over done. Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode endeavours to give the best learning experience to each student. With changing business scenarios, management professionals and organisations need to unlearn and relearn practices to survive and grow.

What is your assessment of industry academia collaboration in India? How can it be improved?

In almost all developed countries, the industry sponsors the research project, setting up labs and incubation centers in the educational institution. This helps both academics and the industry in exploring new dimensions.

What advice would you give to today's youth?

Success and happiness are interconnected. If you pursue your dreams with the right inputs of planning and perseverance you will succeed. My advice to the youth is to enjoy what you do.

Who is an ideal candidate to pursue an Executive MBA?

Any working executive who wants to sharpen his skills for improved efficiency, stimulate lateral thought processes and apply the latest techniques studied through various case-based learning approach, should pursue it. The objective is to strive and take the organisation and the self to the next level.
