Possibly the first of its kind initiative in any state institute, Mumbai's Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) has started video recording all lectures conducted at the institute, making them digitally available to students.

Gaining inspiration from world class institutes, ICT has recently set up video recording system worth Rs 1.50 crore in its classrooms with the view to supplement classroom learning by providing easy access to the course material on the intranet.

A total of 33 classrooms at the institute have been set up with state of art technology, which records lectures with minimal human intervention.

These videos are then uploaded to the institute's intranet portal where students can access this content anytime using their login.

GD Yadav, Vice Chancellor, ICT said that the initiative was started with an aim to benefit students to learn better.

"Many students studying at the institute are from vernacular backgrounds. While their conceptual understanding is good, they have difficulty following certain technical words in English. Making the lectures available online will give students a chance to go back to what was taught in the classroom whenever they want," added Yadav.

While the videos are currently made available only for the students of ICT, the institute is planning to publish them on the Internet in the second phase.

"Like top international universities, we would like to have all the course contents free and open for all users soon. This would happen in the months to come," added Yadav.

Students said that the initiative would benefit them in many ways. "Making all the course content available online is a great idea. One can watch the same lecture all over again, pause, look up references and much more in this system," said a PhD scholar from the institute.
