The University of Mumbai has declared the answer sheet evaluation rate for exams this academic year. Every teacher will be given Rs8 per answer sheet for a two-hour or 60-mark question paper, while the remuneration for the moderator will be Rs10. A principal who oversees the evaluation work will be given an “honorarium” of Re1 per answer sheet; it's 50 paise for clerk and peon.
These rates were implemented during the April 2013 exams.

The university released the rate card through a circular dated October 19. The circular mandates every college will have to evaluate answer sheets 1.5 times of its total student strength. This is being done to ensure timely declaration of results of BA, BSc and BCom.

The teachers’ remuneration was Rs4 until 2012. A college source said, “Every teacher generally corrects 40 answer sheets a day and, hence, can get up to Rs320. Teachers will also be given CAP (Centralised Assessment Process) allowance of Rs175 a day.”

However, the low rate and lack of such an allowance for them has irked principals, with most of them complaining that they get nothing extra for the highly skilled and sensitive job. “The Re1 rate is really funny. It would have been better if the university had given a lump sum instead,” rued a principal.

A principal will get an honorarium of Rs2,800 if all seven papers of 400 BCom candidates are corrected at his/her centre.

Another principal said, “Our job is extremely sensitive. We have to keep everything in safe custody, arrange the teachers and ensure the evaluation is complete within 15 days, as per the latest circular, along with other responsibilities.”

A university official admitted that the job of principals, who will now double up as evaluation directors, is extremely sensitive, but said, “If we increase the honorarium, we will have to hike the exam fee, which would not be in favour of the students.”
