It’s been just a year since the bill to set up Institute of Infrastructure, Technology, Research and Management (IITRAM) was passed. And, the state government is ready to start academic programmes for academic year 2013-14. To begin with, the IITRAM will have two branches – Civil and Electrical engineering.

The state government has aimed to establish IITRAM as a centre for excellence in the area of infrastructure technology and management. “We aim to bring it at par with Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) with special focus on infrastructure engineering and management. We will start the first batch of IITRAM this academic year with two engineering branches —Civil and Electrical,” said a senior official in the state education department.

On the day of HSC results, state education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama had announced that IITRAM will have an initial intake of 240 students, i.e. 120 in each branch.

The institute’s board of governance has been appointed by the state government. “Sudhir Mehta, chairman of Torrent Group, will chair the board.

Other members would include Prof Sudhir Jain, director of IIT-Gandhinagar, and KV Rangaswamy, advisor to L&T’s ECC divison. The board has a mix of experts from industry and academia. The hunt for the director general and the teaching staff is also on and is likely to be completed before the beginning of the academic session,” said the official.

Sources have indicated that some prominent professor from one of the IITs will be appointed as director general of IITRAM. A couple of professors have been identified for the job. IIT teachers are being considered for appointment in the teaching staff.

Out of the total seats, 50% would be reserved for Gujarat domicile students while the rest will be filled up by the Central Counselling Board (CCB), the agency which conducts admissions for the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs). “Admission criteria will be similar to other institutes like PDPU, Nirma, and DA-IICT. The fee for graduate-level courses is likely to be similar to these institutes. However, there are active considerations for offering scholarships to Gujarat domicile students,” said official.
