In an attempt to curb rising cases of cyber crime, the Delhi Police Special Unit for Women and Children is conducting special sessions in schools to educate students about the do’s and don’ts to be observed while using the internet.

“Go To School Initiative- Protecting Children On the Internet ” is an initiative taken by the Delhi Police that has formed ten special teams, each including three officials from North Eastern states to reach out to people from these states.

The 20 minute presentation giving lessons on cyber safety, includes the use of Facebook, WhatsApp and other downloading applications from the internet. In the audio-visual presentation, the students are taught about the privacy settings on different social media platforms and ways of ensuring that the photographs and videos uploaded by them are not misused by others.

“A majority of cyber cases go unreported as children fear telling it to others while some fail to understand that someone is misuing their profiles on social media. Due to this a significant number of children end up being a vulnerable target,” said Varsha Sharma, DCP Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC).

The children were also made aware about good and bad touch and were provided with information about the different helpline numbers which they can use when in trouble. The sessions helped in creating a bond between children and police officials.

In a month, the police has made presentations in 290 schools, both Government and private in which 1,83,469 students have been made a part of this initiative. The program began on November 2.
