Fifty per cent of the children living in Delhi’s Muslim dominated area Jamia Nagar drop out of school at various age groups, this number is more than double as compared to the drop-out rate of children in entire Delhi.
Among those who are attending school, 79 per cent of the children do not get proper education due to lack of facilities. The fact that has been revealed in a report by Institute of Objective Studies (IOS), a think-tank that deals with minority issues, is shocking as Jamia Nagar is considered better than other Muslim localities in terms of the socio-economic strata.

The reason, according to report is the inadequate number of government schools and lack of awareness among people. There are three municipal corporation-run primary schools and two government-run senior secondary schools. The number is clearly inadequate in light of the population, the report says.
The survey was conducted recently in 14 areas in Jamia Nagar including Zakir Nagar, Abul Fazal Enclave, Shaheen Bagh, Okhla Vihar, Batla House and others by professors from IOS. This number is much higher than the overall drop-out rate of the entire Delhi, which was 21.57 percent in the year 2014-15.
It was found that more students drop-out after the age of 14 years, as compared to any other age group. “We found that lack of educational awareness among people and lack of quality public as well as private schools in the surrounding area is one of the biggest factors behind the high drop-out rate,” a professor who was a part of the survey team said.
The number of students choosing Hindi as a medium of instruction in schools here is also high as compared to English. Only 11 per cent of schools in the area have English as the medium of instruction. The report further suggests measures that there is a need to establish counselling centers in the area. There is a need to guide people and aware them about the government scheme. This can be done through community radio, nukkad natak and local newspapers,” the professor added.
