Are you finding it difficult to park your car? Don’t worry. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will throw open its parking lot at Apollo Mills in Lower Parel to public from June 24.

Motorists will be able to park their vehicles for free for the first eight hours. However, they will be charged for every hour beyond eight hours.

The corporation presently charges Rs15 per hour for parking. The parking lot has a capacity to accommodate over 650 vehicles at a time. The vehicles will be parked at five floors – two basements and first three floors.

“We are making available vehicle slots free for first eight hours to encourage people to take vehicles off roads. At present, vehicles can be seen parked on roads in the vicinity of mills. So, we are trying to decongest the roads. Soon, the roads will be announced as no-parking zones,” additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta said.

Though Gupta cleared the ‘free-for-eight-hours’ service, it will be there for three hours only.

He said efforts will be taken to link the automated mill parking lot with BMC’s web-based system to be introduced within the next three months. As per Section 33(24) of the Development Control Regulation, the civic body had allowed developers to consume FSI of four in Island City (for projects developed on 1,000 sq m) and suburbs (2,000 sq m), if they construct parking lots for public.

The scheme, however, had come under scanner after it was observed developers exploited the provision by constructing more parking floors to build more non-parking storey. There are total 92 civic parking lots in the city where 10,314 vehicles can be parked.
