Students of Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) won the annual Mumbai University New Initiative for Joint Action Now (MUNIJAN) competition — a social enterprise competition to inspire collegians to do their bit for the society — for their mentorship programme named project Uthsaah on Gandhi Jayanti.

Project Uthsaah, a year-long mentorship programme for class X students from municipal schools by collegians with the aim to help civic school students prepare for their board examinations, was the brainchild of team Socialite from JBIMS. The team wishes to uplift the quality of education available to students at municipal schools. “We realised that there is a huge gap in the quality of education between private institutes and municipal schools.

So, we decided to create a system where collegians can volunteer to mentor students from civic schools,” said Tasneem Nawab, 22, a second-year student of the institute.

The team includes Siddhant Phutane, 22, Sachin Gupta, 25, and Saiprasad Sale, 24.
Phutane said, “Collegians can register at the online portal if they want to volunteer. We have identified the schools which have very low pass percentage.”

The winning project will be implemented across all colleges affiliated to the Mumbai University. The competition was inaugurated by joint commissioner of police Hemant Nagrale and Mahatma Gandhi’s great grandson Dr Anand Gokani. Remembering Gandhi on the occasion, Gokani said, “Humanity is a student’s real career.”

The university had received 76 applications for the competition out of which eight were selected to present their ideas before a jury.
