There is yet another addition, though a very significant one to the curriculum of the school-going children. Apart from the regular subjects, the students will have to grasp lessons on road safety and rules as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) have joined hands to make road safety a part of the curriculum for class VI to X.
The course are likely to be introduced in the academic session of 2015-16, and the books on the subject are currently being reviewed by the union HRD minister Smriti Irani. The government will begin with chapters on road safety in four subjects, said an official from the surface transport ministry. Hindi, Mathematics, Social Science, and English and for classes VI to X will have the chapters on road safety initially. "It will be seen whether there is need for a separate subject altogether. It may be considered later," the official added.
The basic curriculum has been chalked out by the International Road Federation (IRF) and Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE). "Both the bodies are currently holding workshops with the teachers across the CBSE schools for introduction in the next session." K K Kapila, chairman of the IRF said the draft curriculam has been sent to the union human resource development minister Smriti Irani." The draft has also been sent to National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), and CBSE.
The government had been trying to introduce the road safety in school curriculum for a long time now. The UPA government also tried doing so but the initiative got off the government radar in 2012. The road safety sensitisation among the school children also includes compulsory seminars and workshops for on traffic rules, and practical session on road safety.
