The failure of the plan to alleviate the problem of vacant seats at IITs and NITs has led to some friction between the government and the organising chairman of the JEE-Advance HC Gupta.

A day after dna reported that the IITs had decided to drop the proposal to collaborate with the NITs to prevent engineering aspirants from holding seats in both the institutions partly because of CDAC's delay in developing a fool-proof software, the latter hit back saying the proposal was sabotaged by Gupta. CDAC is the research and development department under the ministry of communications and information technology.

“Professor HC Gupta, organising chairman, was not forthcoming on giving any inputs to the common portal, both in it's design or any other feedback. On July 1, there was the first meeting of the JSAC (joint seat acceptance committee) where the entire process was discussed. Professor Gupta categorically refused to cooperate and mentioned that he would not give any data,” said Rajat Moona director of C-DAC. The minutes of the meeting, a copy of which is with dna, in fact do mention that Gupta refused to give any data to C-DAC before July 8.

The common portal, that was to be developed by C-DAC, was suppose to host data of all rounds of seat allocation of IITs and NITs. According to Moona, the portal was ready on July 2, almost a week before the deadline, but the software could not be tested because of Gupta's refusal to provide seat allotment data.

In his defence, Gupta said he was just following what had been decided by the Joint Admission Board of the IITs. The JAB had said that the first round of the counselling for the NITs would only begin after IIT's first round was over. How could I share any material before July 8 (when the first round was scheduled to get over?” he told dna.
