I have done my BE in Electronics and Telecommunication from Mumbai University. I also have an MBA in Operations Management from Symbiosis International University. I have two years work experience in sales and sales operations. I want to pursue a degree from foreign university which will give me an extra edge. What do you suggest?

Look into an MBA from one of the top 10 business schools in the world such as INSEAD/ Wharton/ Harvard/ Stanford. These are very reputed institutions and will help you add more to the MBA than you already have. If you are unable to make it to any of these top universities, then look at a Masters in Industrial Engineering or Supply Chain Management. These degrees will increase your employability in multi-national organisations.

My daughter will appear for her class X ICSE exam in 2014. What should she do get admission abroad? What are the financial aspects? Also is it possible to get admission to an IBDP programme in India itself? What is the procedure? Do we need to clear both SAT and ACT exams?
—Sujata R. Kawlekar
Preparation to gain admission in to a foreign university should ideally begin in class X. While high school grades (9-12) should always be high, universities often look for a stand out extracurricular factor in an applicant. Furthermore, your daughter will also be required to write application essays. However, that will depend on the university she eventually chooses to apply to. In terms of financial aspects, costs vary from country to country. In the US, most schools range between $35,000-$60,000 per year for tuition and accommodation, whereas in the UK, the average cost is GBP 20,000 a year. In order to gain admission to an IBDP school in India, students are often required to give an entrance test and an interview.

However, this solely depends on the individual school and some may not even follow this procedure. Application deadlines for IBDP programmes in India are between August and October before the class 10 exam. Your daughter should begin her preparation as soon as possible. SAT and ACT are different standardised tests that are required by most US colleges as part of the application. She may give either of the tests and not both, as they are viewed equally by all US universities. The UK universities do not require the SAT or ACT exams.
