Teachers and educationists have complained to the government about errors in textbooks of the state and the Central boards alike.

Educationists have spotted nearly 50 mistakes in the Class 10 science textbook, which has been in circulation for the past six years among students enrolled with both the NCERT and the SCERT. With scientific diagrams carrying the most number of errors, educationists say it may affect students’ chances in competitive exams.

A retired teacher from Ahmednagar, Naresh Tamboli, along with other educationists, has pointed out these mistakes to the board. Last year, when the SSC syllabus had changed and new textbooks were given to students, Tamboli had noticed that there were many errors in the science textbook. “I had written to the state board about the mistakes in their textbooks but they were not corrected. So, I decided to bring the matter to the notice of the NCERT,” he said.

In reply to Tamboli’s email to the NCERT dated April 6, 2012 the board while welcoming his critical comments in science and mathematics textbooks produced by the NCERT, responded on July 2, 2012, saying, “We appreciate your concern regarding science education in Maharashtra, but as education is in the concurrent list, you you may write to the department of education, Maharashtra.”

Spurred by this reply, Tamboli spotted several errors in the NCERT textbooks, which were were in circulation since 2006. However, Sarjerao Jadhav, chairperson of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) said textbooks are constantly revised depending on feedback.

“Once we print one set, there is a review committee which looks into the errors that have unwittingly crept into the book so that they are not repeated in the new textbooks,” said Jadhav.
