Online course for law graduates and professionals: Ken Randall

Tell us about your tie-up with mylaw.net? What courses will you offer?
We are launching and marketing ilawGlobal's collaboration with myLaw.net to offer diploma courses in international taxation and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), starting March 1. The courses are designed by US law faculty and experts associated with ilawglobal. These will be offered online through mylaw.net to Indian students. Faculty from Charlotte Law School, North Carolina and American University in Washington, will be training the students.

How are you reaching out to Indian law students?
In order to get the word around among the law faternity, I have visited law schools in India, and interacted with over 1000 law students, the experience has been quite motivating.  Ultimately an education  enterprise is about fulfilling the academic aspirations of the student. Indian law students are hungry to know how to represent a client on an international platform and we are tapping just that.

What are the benefits of signing up for these courses? Who will certify them?
These courses aim to supplement the knowledge of law students and practicing lawyers in a concise format. For example, a law student who is studying IPR in his/ her class according to the Indian framework, can learn IPR protection under the international, US and EU laws, through our diploma course. It will train them to handle matters for local clients who indulge in trans-border transactions with the US. Thus helping them to be global lawyers. Certification is from the Charlotte Law School.

Is it easy to learn an intricate subject like law online?
In my tenure as a law educationist, I primarily belong to a traditional teaching background. However,  learning law online is at least as good, if not better than traditional learning. Online learning is not restricted to brick and mortar, is customisable, democratic and economical medium of learning. It was during my time as dean of University of Alabama Law School, I was introduced to the concept of online learning. We offered part of our courses on the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) forum, wherein from 15 students in the classroom, we could reach out to 250 students around the country. Plus, we had law faculty not just from Albama, but also California providing their inputs to students in a particular subject. Observing the success, post my retirement from the law school, I decided to invest in online education and set up ilawglobal.

What skills are needed to be a good a lawyer?
A good lawyer first has to be ethical and must understand the subject matter well, but these are given traditional skills. What separates a solid lawyer from a great one is problem solving skills, creativity, idea to help the client achieve the desired outcome from a case in an optimal way, decision making and good counselling.
