'Research' equating India with Pak on "restrictions on religion" discredits itself: Shashi Tharoor slams PEW research paper

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Saturday criticised the research conducted by PEW reseach centre that said that India had high restrictions in religion and was amongst the top in the world.

"Any "research" that actually equates India w/Pak on "restrictions on religion" discredits itself (sic)," he said on social media. 

The Congress leader's statement comes after a mob beat a Pakistani student to death after he was accused of sharing blasphemous content on social media.

As per the report, India is amongst the top five countries in the world that has the highest levels of social hostilities involving religion amongst the 25 most populous countries in the world.

The report also adds that India, along with Russia, Egypt, Pakistan and Nigeria had the highest combined levels of government restrictions and social hostilities involving religion in 2015, while Brazil, Japan, South Africa, Ethiopia and the Philippines had the fewest restrictions and hostilities.

PEW's Research Centre added that government restrictions on religion and social hostilities involving religion increased in 2015 for the first time in three years.
